Last Wednesday, the brothers of Pi Chapter gave out their annual teacher of the year award, honoring the university’s most influential and impacting professors. This year’s recipient is Professor Mark Collins of the Marketing and Logistics Department. His hard work and dedication at the university has made him a student favorite, known for his fun teaching style and hands on approach towards his classes. We would like to congratulate Mr. Collins on the award and wish him good luck with his future classes at the university.
UT KA’s Visit National HQ in Lexington, VA

On March 16, the brothers of Pi Chapter visited Lexington, Virginia, the birthplace of our order formed on Dec. 21, 1865. We began the trip by visiting Mulberry Hill, home of Kappa Alpha Order’s National Office, where we were given an extensive tour of the Headquarters and grounds. Among the items displayed were the University of Tennessee Pi chapter’s original charter. After leaving the house, the tour continued at the University of Washington and Lee University where National Office staff led instructive sessions on recruitment and new member education. Once lunch was provided, the tour continued, with stops at Lee Chapel, the grave of Stonewall Jackson, Kappa Alpha Order’s Alpha Chapter House, and Virginia Military Institute. The trip was a success as the men of our Chapter returned to their roots and gained perspective on the purpose of Kappa Alpha Order.
2013 officers

In December, the brothers of Pi Chapter inducted a new set of officers. The head table of Ryan Roberts, Whit Chesnutt and Justin McGee passed along the reigns to Will Hodge, Greg Maynard and Owen Rockett. President Hodge is a junior who recently served KA as Recruitment Chair and Number VII (Parliamentarian). Brother Maynard was elected as Number II and Brother Rockett as Number III to complete the head table. Since the new head table was installed, the chapter has successfully initiated of four new brothers, participated in two mixers, continued our Sunday church attendance at Bearden United Methodist Church, and are getting closer to achieving our semester’s philanthropy hours. We would like to recognize our head table for their hard work and wish them our continued thanks for everything they do. Keep up the good work.

Spring Induction and Initiation

In January we inducted four new members to Pi Chapter Kappa Alpha Order. The ceremony was conducted with the entire chapter in attendance, including Province Commander Jim Lawson. These men’s new member education began immediately afterwards, with each man putting in countless amounts of work. All their time and effort eventually came to an end on March 6 at Bearden United Methodist Church, where the men were given instruction and insight into the order’s secrets and traditions, culminating with their official initiation into the Kappa Alpha Order. We would like to congratulate these men on successfully joining our order: William Bane, Michael Heller, William Barker, and Dustin Sale. We believe that these men will be a nice addition to the order and welcome them.
Regional Leadership Conference 2013

This past weekend the men of Kappa Alpha Order’s Pi Chapter hosted the gathering of the Feller province chapters for our annual KA regional leadership conference. Overall, we welcomed around 200 brothers from MTSU, the University of the South, Tennessee Tech, and University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The event started with a model initiation demonstrated by the brothers of MTSU’s initiation team. This was followed the next day by day long classes hosted by National Kappa Alpha counselors, including David Barksdale, Nick Palmer, and Greg Singleton. The brothers were also given presentations by Sally Parish and Lindi Smedberg, members of UT Student Affairs staff. Together as a province we learned important skills that will help us down the road in improving our chapters respectfully and becoming the men that Kappa Alpha expects of us. We would like to thank the men that took time out of their schedules to lead the classes.

Pi Chapter Celebrates Convivium
On February 1, the brothers of Pi Chapter and four alumni, including Province Commander Jim Lawson, gathered to formally celebrate the annual Convivium, the founding of Kappa Alpha Order and the birthday of our spiritual founder, Robert E. Lee. Our guest speaker was Frank Scarpino, a well respected historian, who is known through his dedicated work at the nearby Bleak House. His presentation was an interesting and informative rendition of the life of Robert E. Lee and was greatly appreciated by the brothers. The venue for the celebration was perfectly fitting for one of the most prestigious events in the Order’s history, as we gathered at club Le Conte overlooking downtown Knoxville. Dinner and desert were served as the brothers enjoyed another Convivium.
Church clean-up and attendance

Pi Chapter brothers participated in a church clean-up service project at Bearden United Methodist Church in Knoxville on Saturday, December 2. Among the list of work done was trimming bushes and trees, raking leaves, digging around the grounds, spreading mulch and more. Thanks to a handful of brothers who stayed late to rake neighbors’ yards, $200 was donated to MDA, the Order’s philanthropy. The following day, brothers attended the Sunday service at the church. About 50 active members were present at the church. The KA brothers are thankful for their relationship with Bearden as they allow us to conduct initiation on their grounds.
Fall 2012 Initiation

On October 25 and 26, it was finally time for Pi chapter to initiate its Fall 2012 pledge class. At the end of a valuable new member period awaited an initiation ceremony that is unrivaled among Greek societies. Pi chapter’s newest members were given insight into the secrets and mysteries of the Order, and Bearden United Methodist Church willingly allowed us to use their sanctuary for the ceremony. Special thanks to Zeta Epsilon chapter from Tennessee Tech for assisting the initiation, and congratulations to the 26 men who were initiated: Sy Anthony, Griffin Asplund, Henley Baugh, Thomas Butler, Calvin Chen, Charlie Coffey, Jacob Curtis, Hunter Daniel, Ryan Davis, Sheldon Felts, Walker Fitzgerald, Hudson Forrister, Clark Harrington, Channell Kershaw, Peter Murray, Hoyt Newsom, Austin Olah, Greyson Ramos, Bill Rickard, Daniel Roberts, Jack Ruffin, Ian Rutledge, Alex Sewell, Joseph Teal, Sam Turner and Zach Volke!
Clean-up for Second Harvest Chili Cook-Off

On Sunday, October 21, brothers from Pi chapter assisted in the clean-up of the East Tennessee Chili Cook-Off. The cook-off, presented by Bush Brothers Co., raised tens of thousands of dollars for Second Harvest Food Bank. The entire chapter assisted in the clean-up, which is becoming an annual service project for the KA brothers.
